Hailakandi: Along with other parts of Assam, Silpi Divas was observed in Hailakandi district coinciding with the death anniversary of cultural icon and freedom fighter, Rupkonwar Jyoti Prasad Agarwala on Thursday.

Several schools across the district observed the day in a befitting manner. At Nityananda High School, the day was marked with eloquent tributes to the radiant personality who dedicated his entire life to the greater cause of Assamese literature and culture. Throwing light on the many-sided personality, speakers SK Singha, L Ratendra Singha, AK Dey and FA Laskar said Jyoti Prasad Agarwala apart from being a creative genius - poet, musician, lyricist, playwright and filmmaker - was also a sagacious sage.

“We must emulate the ideals of Rupkonwar and work relentlessly and selflessly to accomplish the dreams knitted by the cultural doyen,” they added. Teachers at SAM High School exhorted the students to imbibe the teachings, sense of patriotism and the path shown by Rupkonwar for a beautiful society. A function was also held at Sanarei Mitei HS School to pay tribute to Agarwala, the pioneer of filmmaking in the state who made the first Assamese film Joymoti in 1930s. Tribal High School, MRC High School and Govindamal Surana Smriti High School also observed the day.

TEZPUR: Tezpur Baan Theatre, Tezpur Xahitya Xabha, Jyoti Bharati(poki), AASU Tezpur Chapter remembered Rupkonwar Jyoti Prasad Agarwala by observing the 69th death anniversary of the cultural iconic figure at Tezpur on Thursday. Tezpur Artist Forum along with Silpi Divas organized an art exhibition on the completion of 100 years of Art Exhibition in Assam led by Jyoti Prasad Agarwala in 1919.

The programme started with the lighting of earthen lamp by renowned artiste Noni Borpujari and it was followed by floral tributes to Rupkonwar by Hemanta Kumar Barua, President, Tezpur Xahitya Xabha, singer, Pankaj Bordoloi, members of Guwahati Artist Gild and many dignitaries attended the programme.

Speaking on the occasion, Noni Borpujari said, “100 years ago on this day Jyoti Prasad Agarwala founded the first art workshop on Tezpur, and this was the starting of first art exhibition in Assam and through this step many artistes have been able to establish themselves in the national and international level.”

DOOMDOOMA: Silpi Divas was observed by Kakajan Zonal Education centre at Tara TE No.2 LP School on Thursday where students of altogether 13 numbers of lower and higher primary schools under it took part. The programme got underway with art competition held among the school children followed by lighting of lamp before the portrait of Jyoti Prasad Agarwal by Tipeswar Chetia. Akhrul Islam, Education Officer, Kakapather Education Block who attended the programme as special guest in his speech said that the by introduction of Assamese as an additional subject in the non-Assamese medium schools, the unity and the process of assimilation of different ethnic groups of Assam would be enhanced. Besides him the meeting was also addressed by litterateur Sarat Chiring Phukan, Jornalist Arjun Baruah, science writer Runumoni Dutta Bhuyan among others.

The whole programme got colourful because of participation of all 13 primary school students. The whole programme was anchored by Zonal Coordinator Prafulla Bharali. On the other hand Silpi Divas was also observed at Doomdooma by lighting of lamp before the statue of Jyoti Prasad Agarwal in the evening by Surajit Moran, President, AJYCP, Tinsukia District Committee, Arjun Baruah, President, Doomdooma Sakha Xahitya Xabha. Arjun Barua and Deben Baruah spoke about life and achievements of Jyoti Prasad Agarwala.
