Social organizations serve ultimatum to KAAC

HAMREN, March 28: More than 25 social organizations jointly served an ultimatum to the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) on Tuesday.

The organizations demanded the KAAC to prepare election law and to repeal the new land act as per the 6th Schedule of the Constitution of India within April 28, before the KAAC election process and code of conduct. The social organizations had earlier submitted a memorandum to the KAAC on November 15, 2016 to demand immediate preparation of KAAC election law and rules under the provisions of the Sixth Schedule to the Constitution of India under paragraph of 2 of sub-paragraph 7, to repeal of the unconstitutiol Mikir Hill (Transfer of land) Act, 1959 and to restore village traditiol council.

The organizations stated that if the KAAC and the State Government tried to delay the process and hold the KAAC election without passing the election act and rules within the time frame, the organizations would intensify their agitation further. The organizations also held a tribal unity rally from 5 Mile NH 36 to KAAC Secretariat after the ultimatum was submitted and a public meeting was held at Government Boys’ High School playground. The rally was attended by social organization leaders from different tribal communities in Karbi Anglong including J.I. Kathar, retired adviser, Sixth Schedule Implementation Committee (SSIC), Raton Terang, president of United Karbi Student Association (UKSA), Dhansing Ronghang, general secretary KARAA and several organization leaders.
