SHILLONG, Nov 11: Social organizations of Meghalaya will be staging a public rally against the possible invocation of Arm Forces Special Powers Acts (AFSPA) in Garo Hills region. The public rally to be held on November 16 will be led by the Thma U Rangli (TUR), Garo Students’ Union (GSU) and Civil Society Women’s Organization (CSWO). The public rally will begin at 11 am from Fire Brigade to Additiol Secretariat Parking Lot. “It is of grave concern to many that there is possible invocation of AFSPA in Meghalaya and we need to come together and make our voices heard,” the TUR said in a statement issued here today. “It is easy to call on AFSPA and never easy to revoke it as is the case in Manipur where it has been in operation since 1958 forcing Irom Sharmila to be on her hunger strike for the last 15 years,” the TUR added.
