Sonowal takes stock of Majuli development

GUWAHATI, June 21: Expressing serious concern over the condition of roads in Majuli, Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal asked the Public Works Department (PWD) to take over all the roads of the river island and repair them on a ‘war-footing’.

Holding a sub-divisiol-level review meeting in Majuli on Monday evening, Chief Minister Sonowal asked all the departmental officers to implement their schemes effectively, efficiently and creditably. He asked the PWD to take up the repair work of Kamalabari-Gormur connecting road to the satisfaction of the local people and ensure its early completion, a press release said.

On the other hand, the Chief Minister also asked Water Resource Department to use paver blocks to fortify the embankments in the river island. Sonowal also took stock of the erosion magement work being undertaken in Majuli and asked the Brahmaputra Board and Water Resource Department to provide him their line of actions for erosion magement, the release added.

Sonowal also directed the sub-divisiol officer (civil) to do the needful for the constriction of permanent office building and staff quarters in the island and assured his government’s help to his front. He also asked the SDO(C) to furnish him the mes of the departments which failed to set up their offices even after allotment of land.

Sonowal asked Inland Water Transport Department to prepare a roadmap for a secured and efficient network of ferry services in the island and sought a report on how many ferries and quantum of load carried by them on a daily-basis. He also reviewed various schemes and projects being implemented by the Block Development Offices and asked them to execute the schemes in the right spirit for the benefit of the people of Majuli. Taking a critical view of the poorly magement schemes in Majuli, Sonowal asked the SDO(C) to freeze the subsequent instalments for those schemes.

Special Commissioner and Secretary PWD Mohan Chandra Boro, i/c Deputy Commissioner Jorhat Roshni Aparanji Korati, SDO (C), rsing Pawar, officers from the Brahmaputra Board and a host of other departmental officers were present at the meeting.
