SPOs Reiterate Demand for Regularization of Service

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Sept 20: The Special Police Officer’s Welfare Society (SPOWS) on Thursday threatened Dispur to stage protest during the next Assembly session if their services are not regularized.

It must be mentioned here that the Special Police Officers (SPOs) had played a crucial role in dealing with various militant outfits in BTAD and Dima Hasao district in the bygone years.

Talking to the reporters here, SPOWS vice president Jitumoni Chaharia alleged that following the surrendering of the DHD outfits, Dispur started showing apathy to the SPOs. Stating that as many as 1000 surrendered DHD militants were permanently absorbed in the Assam Police in 2010 by the then Congress regime, Chaharia argued, “Why the SPOs were neglected?”

Notably, the SPOs have been demanding regularization of their services since 2010. In respond to their demand, the State’s home department in 2013 assured the SPOs to absorb them by creating the 3rd Assam Industrial Security Forces (AISF) battalion till 2015. However, instead of creating the 3rd AISF battalion within promised time, the SPOs were discharged from services.

Earlier on April this year, reiterating their demand, more than hundreds of SPOs had attempted to commit suicide at the Saraighat Bridge, Guwahati. This time, they were convinced on the pretext that a face to face discussion would be held between the SPOs and the State’s Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. However, this time too, their grievances were entirely neglected and the promises never turned into reality. Under this given situation, the SPOs have once again reminded Dispur of their promises and threatened that the Government’s continued apathy will prompt them to resort to initiate democratic movement. Moreover, they further threatened that they would also commit suicide at any place in and around Guwahati in case their demands are not meet.
