Spring festival Ali Aye Ligang celebrated with enthusiasm in Lakhimpur district

LAKHIMPUR: The Mising community celebrated its spring festival Ali Aye Ligang with enthusiasm across Lakhimpur district on Wednesday. As a spring festival of the second largest indigenous community of Assam, Ali Aye Ligang is associated with agriculture, especially with the beginning of the Ahu paddy cultivation. The festival marks the onset of sowing paddy seeds. The name of the festival is made up of three Mising terms - ‘Ali’ means legumes, ‘Aye’ means seed and ‘Ligang’ means to sow.

The 46th Kendriya Ali Aye Ligang Celebration Committee of Lakhimpur celebrated the festival in Uttar Lakhimpur Mising Kala Kristi Bikash Kendra premises with a two-day long programme on February 19 and February 20. On the first day of the event, various competitions of Mising culture, including traditional attire exhibition, Mising folk song and folk dance, in addition to drawing and essay writing were held.

The second day agenda on Wednesday began with unfurling of flag by celebration committee president Dhanprabha Mili Tao. It was followed by smriti tarpan, inauguration of Murong Ghar, Lig-gad and a colourful cultural procession. Tax Superintendent Dibya Ranjan Borah inaugurated the cultural procession.

The open session of the event was inaugurated by chief adviser of Mising Dirbi Kebang, Ekalabya Gam. Forest Man Padma Shri Jadab Payeng, social activist Uday Sankar Hazarika, Lakhimpur District Congress committee president Dr. Joy Prakash Das, Tarun Chandra Taid and Dr. Jatin Medak spoke in the open session, which was anchored by celebration committee secretary Nirmal Payeng and cultural activist Progress Medak. Dr. Kripanath Pegu inaugurated the cultural programme held in the evening in memory of artiste Mrinal Doley.
