SHILLONG: The agitating teachers of St Edmund’s College on Tuesday demanded the resignation of its Principal Sylvanus Lamare. “He is just a puppet; he is in the seat but he has no power,” professor FF Ropmay of St Edmund’s College said.

It may be mentioned that earlier the St Edmund’s College unit of the Meghalaya College Teacher’s Association (MCTA) had demanded the resignation of Br Simon Coelho, secretary and Br Julius Steljus, finance officer.

The teachers are on an indefinite strike to demand the reinstatement of their colleague, Jeffreyson Wahlang of the Sociology Department, whose service was terminated abruptly by the governing body of the college. Among other demands of the teachers are the dissolution of the governing body. Ropmay said that presently it consists of only 5-6 members who are from the Christian Borthers, the sponsoring body. He said that representatives of the teachers have resigned while there are no representative from the parents and government’s side.

“The representative from the university are just stooges and are pro-management,” Ropmay alleged. The college teachers wants the establishment of the full governing body as per the Meghalaya Deficit Aided Management Rules, 2013. Ropmay also said that the teachers wants the withdrawal of the Service Rules of the college which is for the college post teachers.

“It gives blanket power to the management to exploit and suppress the teachers which was unlawfully passed by the governing body,” he said. He also said that the teachers demand pay fixation. “Their pay is not uniform and irregular. The management pays them as they want,” Ropmay added.
