ST status for indigenous Muslims of Assam demanded

Goalpara, December 27: The state committee of Goria-Moria-Deshi Jatiya Parishad (GMDJP) warned on Sunday that political parties of the State should be ready of straight defeat in the assembly seats domited by them unless the community was given its due importance. “We want Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for the indigenous Muslims living in the State,” said Hafijul Ahmed, president GMDJP. “Our aim is to provide political safeguard to our people like the other ethnic tribes of the State,” said Nurul Haque, special adviser to the organization. The GMDJP leaders were speaking in a meeting organized at the Joytun Nesa Memorial School, Goalpara town where a new district committee for the organization was also formed with Faruk Ahmed as president, Saif-ul- islam as executive president and Rizwanul Islam as general secretary. Among others who spoke in the programme were central publicity secretary Sahid Ali, secratary Azizul Rahman, assistant secretary Arif Ullah and jourlist Sofikul Ahmed.
