State Bank of India Tinsukia branch faces wrath of customers

TINSUKIA: The Tinsukia branch of State Bank of India, which witnessed a daring burglary amounting to Rs 18.85 lakh on Tuesday during ‘lunch break’, is now facing the wrath of customers over the security of valuables deposited with the bank. The incident took place due to the alleged irresponsible and callous staff who was handling counter no 1.

The CCTV footage revealed that a masked man in cap was all alone sitting in a bench opposite to the cash counters for quite a long time. The staff of the cash counters left for lunch at 2.30 pm. The man walked inside the cubicle through the door and picked up the cash and left unnoticed. The bank officials lodged an FIR at Tinsukia PS at 5.15 pm after almost two hours. However, it could not be ascertained whether the bank officials informed the police over phone immediately after the incident.

The most intriguing point is that SBI Tinsukia branch has taken out 30-45 minutes from the banking transaction hours for ‘lunch break’ without any public notice. Though bank officials claim that banking work is not hampered during lunch break as they keep some counters open, the CCTV footage revealed otherwise. A senior bank official categorically stated that there was no provision for lunch break during banking hours and the practice adopted by the bank was illegal. Surprisingly, the bank in its FIR did mention about the lunch break.
