State Disaster Risk Reduction Day Observed in Sikkim

Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority, Land Revenue & Disaster Management Department observed the State Disaster Risk Reduction Day themed ‘Volunteerism in Disaster Management’ on Wednesday at Chintan Bhawan in Sikkim.

While attending the event as the chief guest, the Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Chamling applauded the initiatives of Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA). It praised the SSDMA for being an active participant in various for mitigation acts of disasters. The CM also announced that there will be awards and felicitations for prominent helpers/NGOs/SHGs that are involved in disaster management during Republic Day. He further said that by 2020, Sikkim will become a model State in disaster management.

Further, Chamling stressed the need for preventive measures and elementary checking as that will help the disaster management authority in obtaining more concrete and fruitful outcome. In this regard, the CM has also directed the chief secretary A.K. Shrivastava to make sure that all new infrastructures be made earthquake-resistant.

Pondering over the causes of the natural disaster, Chamling says that global warming is the main cause of natural destruction in the world. Moreover, the ban on the use of bio-degradable products is another factor that hampers the environment a lot.

The Sikkim government initiative “Organic Sikkim” has been able to garner quite an appreciation throughout the world. The CM also encouraged the people of the state to use this brand name and use it for the promotion of their state’s image. He also showed interest in introducing disaster management as a subject at the primary level from next academic session.

He insisted that it the students and the people in general who will have to show their interest in contributing towards spreading the awareness messages to others as awareness is a must. Disaster, its causes and impact must be known to people as then only one can build resilience towards the impact of disasters due to natural calamities.
