Storm hits Garo Hills damaging hundreds of houses across

SHILLONG: Strong winds hit Garo Hills region of Meghalaya in the wee hours of Wednesday damaging hundreds of houses across villages.

According to South West Garo Hills district administration, high-speed winds hit several villages namely – Jolgaon, Latrigre Songma, Jelbongpara Songma and Morkona.

Rooftops and trees were uprooted but fortunately, there were no casualties.

According to South West Garo Hills, Deputy Commissioner, Ram Kumar, 27 villages were affected in Betasing block, 14 villages in Rerapara and 12 villages in Zikzak block.

“Around 3,000 households were affected by the storm,” Kumar said.

The South West Garo Hills district administration will distribute basic items like rice, lentils (dal) and salt to the affected people for a period of three days starting from Thursday.

Meanwhile, in West Garo Hills district, 140 villages and 700 houses were damaged.

“Three persons received minor injuries in Adingre,” West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Ram Singh said.

According to the Deputy Commissioner, all blocks in the district and Tura urban area were affected by the storm.

“We are giving gratuity relief to households which are fully damaged after getting reports from the block development officers,” Singh said.

It may be mentioned that the Met department has predicted thunderstorm accompanied with gusty wind (wind speed reaching 40-50 km) for Wednesday and Thursday.
