Students bodies serve ultimatum, demand shifting of case to CBI

ITANAGAR, June 25: Demanding immediate action to nab the culprits involved in the murder of Toko Yame, students organizations have served an ultimatum of 15 days to the State Government for transfer of the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) from the Special Investigation Team (SIT).

The organisations included the All East Kameng District Students’ Union (AEKDSU), All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (APPSU), and the All Nyishi Students’ Union (ANSU) besides various other district students’ unions.

The organizations earlier in the morning took out a solidarity march from Akashwdeep to Tennis court at IG Park on Monday here.

Alleging political interference in the case to weaken the case, AEKDSU said that police officer and SIT team initiating the case earlier were transferred within a short span of time from the Tawang police station.

AEKSU president Chakang Yangda speaking on the occasion announced the deadline to the authority to re-arrest all the 20 people who were detained earlier for interrogation at Tawang.

“If the Government fails to act according to the demands made by the students organizations, we will initiate economic blockade at Tawang district and also resort to non - cooperation movement against the State Government," he warned.

The victim's father, Koya Yame, had alleged that his son’s murder was pre-planned where he was abducted and brutally tortured before being killed and thrown into the Biga waterfalls at Tawang.

“Till date the authority concerned did not file any chargesheet against those suspects who were detained earlier in connection with the murder. Besides, instead of filing the chargesheet they were granted bail," he added.

AAPSU general secretary Tobom Dai said justice must be delivered. “Criminals do not belong to any community, religion and caste, one who dares to commit such heinous crime should not be protected,” Dai said.

Legal advisor to AEKDSU advocate SD Loda added that though nine months have passed, still SIT is clueless and the postmortem report is yet to be submitted.

Late Toko Yame (a school boy) went missing after a group fight broke out on 16 September, 2017 between the students of Government Higher Secondary School and JNV Tawang. Subsequently his semi-decomposed body was found a week later at the Biga waterfalls on 23rd September.

Questioning the efficiency of SIT, president of the All Kra-Daadi District Students’ Union (AKDDSU), Gora Rikam Bhai, informed that among the 28 students from Kra-Daadi district, two were severely beaten up with rod, adding that the act could have led to communal clashes.

The students organizations also demanded that the police officials on duty during the clash between the two groups of students should be suspended, all accused be rearrested, and the postmortem report be submitted within the slated period.
