Students’ body demands forest check gate

HOWRAGHAT July 1: The Karbi Students’ Association, Students and Youth Council, All India Students’ Association, Asom Jatiyabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad and Students and Youth for Justice, held a joint sit-in demanding immediate installation of forest check gates in all bordering areas under the administrative jurisdiction of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council. The student’s body submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal through the SDO (Civil), Bokajan to this effect. The memo mentioned that forest resources of the district were rapidly diminishing and to regulate the distribution of the forest produces judiciously without being overexploited by smugglers, re-institution of all existing forest check gates, particularly in the border areas was the need of the hour.

“We appeal to the Chief Minister to prevent smuggling of all forest products across the border. Forest check gates should immediately be re-installed to prevent the illegal act,” the memorandum stated.
