GUWAHATI: The students fraternity in hundreds from the leading colleges and universities in and around Guwahati took to the streets on Tuesday and told Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 — “If the cap fits, wear it’ (if some criticism applies to you, accept it)”.

The long procession from Gauhati Club Rotary Point to the DC Office, Kamrup (Metro) shouted a slogan in chorus – Cap pindhai CAB nidibo {(Don’t enforce CAB- Citizenship Amendment Bill) on us like a cap}.

The students, numbering some hundreds, came from educational institutions like Cotton University, Gauhati University, Assam Engineering Institute, Gauhati College, B Barooah College, Veterinary Science College, JB Law College, Guwahati City College, Government Ayurvedic College etc. They termed the Chief Minister as modern-day Badan for his role in the Citizenship Bill. Slogan that rent the air were–Jibone morone aami chirodin Axomiya (We’re Assamese forever – alive or dead), BJP tor swarup sinisu (BJP we’ve come to know your true identity), chup thak misolia (keep quiet liar) – and the like.

The students submitted their seven-point memorandum addressed to the Prime Minister to the Kamrup (M) Deputy Commissioner.

Earlier, there was a rally before taking out the procession. Addressing the rally, noted intellectual Udayaditya Bharali said: “This Bill is inviting the doomsday for the indigenous people of Assam. At this hour of crisis, can students sit tight? They’ll have to take the responsibility?”

Another intellectual Dinesh Baishya said: “We need to praise the students coming out in hordes to raise their voice against the anti-Assam Bill.”
