Supreme Court quashes public interest litigation on boundary dispute between Assam and Meghalaya

SHILLONG: The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed the public interest litigation (PIL) seeking intervention into the delay in resolving the age-old boundary dispute between Assam and Meghalaya. “We are not inclined to entertain the present petition. The writ petition is accordingly dismissed,” a division bench of the Supreme Court said. The Supreme Court said that it did so after having heard learned counsel for the petitioner and upon perusing the relevant material. It may be mentioned that on March 14, the PIL was admitted by the apex court. It may be mentioned that the PIL was filed by THS Bonney former general secretary of the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM). Bonney had contested the April 11 election from the Shillong Parliamentary seat.

Notably, the PIL was filed after the Centre did not respond to a memorandum submitted by KHNAM last year.

The memorandum was submitted to the union home minister Rajnath Singh requesting him to intervene into the matter to resolve the issue and put an end to the problems faced by the people residing along the inter-state boundary.
