Supreme Court to Release its Verdict on Burning Firecrackers this Diwali

If you love burning firecrackers and that is one key thing that makes you wait for Diwali every year, then there are heavy doubts this year as to whether one will be even allowed to get his hands on firecrackers or not. The final verdict on whether to burn or not to burn firecrackers in this Diwali will be released by the Supreme Court on Tuesday.

The Supreme Court verdict will come in reply to a plea made for banning the manufacture, sale and possession of firecrackers across the country. Although the matter was listed to be heard today by the bench of Justice AK Sikri and Justice Ashok Bhushan, it will be pronouncing the judgment on October 23.

In its August 28 order, the Supreme Court had said that the reason for practising a ban on the firecrackers is to curb the deteriorating air pollution. The court had reserved its order and will be releasing its final say tomorrow after hearing the petitioners, firecrackers manufacturers, the Centre and the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

However, opposing the SC statement, the firecracker manufacturers are of this opinion that the firecrackers are not the sole cause of rising pollution during Diwali. It is only one of the contributing factors and this cannot be a reason for the SC to shut down an entire industry.

The manufacturers said, "The question is whether an entire industry can be shut down citing air pollution while other industries are allowed to continue."
