Supreme Court Today Dismisses The Petition Of Alleged British Citizenship of Rahul Gandhi

Guwahati: The Supreme Court today dismissed a petition that demanded a probe into Congress President Rahul Gandhi's citizenship. The petition which also wanted the court to debar Rahul Gandhi from contesting national elections had argued that he was listed as a British citizen in a company report.

Chief Justice of India, Ranjan Gogoi said that some company in some form has mentioned that the Congress President Rahul Gandhi as British citizen, so does he becomes British citizen? Dismissed.

Based on a complaint filed by BJP MP Subramanian Swamy who alleged that Gandhi is a British citizen, the Home Ministry earlier issued a notice to the Congress president to explain his position over complaints on his citizenship.

The notice of the home ministry stated that it had received a representation from Swamy in which it has been brought out that a company named Backops Limited was registered in the United Kingdom in the year 2003 with address 51 Southgate Street, Winchester, Hampshire SO23 9EH and that you were one of the directors and secretary of the said company.

In a letter issued by Director of citizenship of home ministry, BC Joshi, it said that it has been brought out in the complaint that in the annual returns filed on 10/10/2005 and 31/10/2006, your date of birth has been given as 19.06/1970 and that you have declared your nationality as British. In the dissolution application dated February 17, 2009 referred to the above-mentioned company, Gandhi's nationality has been mentioned as British.

The Congress, however, had dismissed the issue saying the notice was a political move by the BJP to divert the attention of the public from the key issues. Congress Spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said that the entire world knows that Rahul Gandhi is an Indian citizen by birth. "As Modi ji has no answer for unemployment, agrarian distress and black money, he is resorting to fake narrative to divert the attention from the key issues," Surjewala said.

The BJP had raised allegations of discrepancies in the nomination of Rahul Gandhi from Amethi Lok Sabha seat. His nomination papers were found valid by the returning officer.
