Surrendered ULFA not happy with peace talks

GUWAHATI, April 7: The leaders of the All Assam Surrendered ULFA Samittee (AASUS) are in frowning faces on the ongoing talks between the government and the ULFA.

Talking to the media in Guwahati on Saturday, AASUS president Rajkumar Dowarah said: “A number of ULFA cadres had to surrender on April 14, 1992 as part of the organization’s negotiation with the Government within the framework of Indian Constitution. However, the government held no discussion with the surrendered ULFA men on their five-point demands. There has been no dismissal of the cases against the surrendered ULFA men for which trials are still going on. Our other demands are introduction of inner-line permits in Assam, according tribal autonomous state status to Assam, rehabilitation of surrendered ULFA men etc.”

The AASUS is also opposing the move to accord permanent citizenship to a section of people through the amendment of the Citizenship Act. “Such a move is set to spell doom for the Assamese society,” he said, and set a deadline for the government to fulfill its demands raised in 1992. “If our demands aren’t met within a month, we’re going to start an agitation,” he said.
