Swahid Divas observed across State

LAKHIMPUR: In connection with the death anniversary of Khageswar Talukdar, the first and foremost martyr of Assam Movement, the Lakhimpur district unit of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), in collaboration with its North Lakhimpur regional unit, observed Swahid Divas on Monday at Dulen Hazarika Memorial Auditorium in association with the people of Hindu Gaon.

The agenda of the event began with unfurling of flag by Lakhimpur AASU president Pulok Borah while secretary Dhanmoni Dutta paid floral tribute to the martyrs. Activists of Assam Movement-cum-students leaders Uday Sankar Hazarika, Deepak Hazarika, Kamal Dutta, Kishor Hazarika, Jugal Das, Jugal Hazarika, Nirjatita Samanwayrakhi Samiti president Tarun Gogoi and secretary Jogananda Bhorali commemorated the martyrs by delivering lectures in the event.

The families of martyrs Deepchand Rajkhowa, Sarulora Saikia, Dharma Kanta Gogoi and Abala Das along with activists of the Assam Movement were felicitated. Naam kirtan was also organized for the eternal peace of the soul of the martyrs.

DEMOW: In order to pay tribute to the martyrs who laid down their lives for the cause of the State, the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) Demow Regional Committee observe Martyrs’ Day in Demow on Monday. The leaders of AASU Demow Regional Committee pay tribute to the martyrs by lighting earthen lamps in Demow on Monday evening.

DHEKIAJULI: Under the aegis of Sonitpur district Martyrs Family Coordination Parishad, Martyrs’ Day was observed with a day-long programme at Johamari under Borsola constituency on Monday. The day-long programme was observed at Jahamari Swahid Bhavan. Dignitaries in the programme offered floral tribute at the portrait of Khargeswar Talukdar, the first martyr of Assam Movement, and other martyrs of the State. Thereafter, a general meeting was held under the president ship of Surendra Khanal, Principal of Bargaon Naharbari College. In the meeting several distinguished leaders were present and prominent among them were Sharat Baruah, chief adviser of All Assam Martyrs Family Coordination Parishad, Ratul Kumar Nath, vice-president, Sonitpur district AGP committee and Dilip Borah, president of AGP Borsola Constituency Committee.

MANGALDAI: Tribute was paid to 855 martyrs of the six-year long Assam Movement led by All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) in Darrang district on Monday on the occasion of Martyr’s Day.

To mark this auspicious day, Paschim Darrang Sangrami Satirtha Sanmilan- a platform of the former AASU members of the greater western part of the district organized a day-long programme in the premises of Borbori Pragati Sangha near Duni. The observation featured different programmes, including hoisting of the organizational flag, swahid tarpan, smriti tarpan, lighting of lamps, Swahid memorial one-act play contest, Keshab Deka memorial Diha Naam presentation contest and felicitation of the family members of the martyrs among others.

Several former leaders of the AASU, including Bhargab Kr Das, former assistant general secretary of AASU, Gajen Bora, president of Paschim Darrang Sangrami Satirtha Sanmilan, Phanidhar Rajbongshi, Mothura Mohan Deka, Mohan Chaliha, Kamala Kanta Deka, Golok Saikia, Hari Chandra Deka and Umesh Deka were present on the occasion and paid deep tribute by offering flowers to the martyrs’ memorial.

Speaking on the occasion, Bhargab Kr Das observed that the sacrifices of the martyrs would be recognized only when the youth force could be motivated towards a positive and productive frame of mind.

“We had taken up series of agenda for economic uplift of our people, including involvement of our youths in minor skilful professions for self-employment. But I am sorry to say that such practices could not be continued,” he said.

He also urged the youths to follow the path of some ideal young farmers and agri-entrepreneurs of the State, including Nabanita Bora of Jorhat, Dhruba Saikia of Darrang, Manab Chaliha of Guwahati and Habibur Rahman of Darrang for self-employment.
