Sylliang gets backing for KHADC special session

SHILLONG, May 7: Mawhati MDC James Sylliang has said that around 10 Members of District Councils (MDC) are supporting his signature campaign, which was a demand to convene a special session to seek clarification from the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Chief Executive Member (CEM) PN Syiem on the alleged diversion of Rs 28 crore for council assets.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Sylliang said, “At present, there are more than 10 MDCs who have verbally assured me that they are ready to sign in support of my campaign to convene a special session.”
Expressing confidence, he also said that the support of MDCs might even increase in the coming days.
“Those MDCs who are not part of the alleged misappropriation should come forward and support the demand to call for a special session of the council,” Sylliang said.
The MDC from Mawhati said the amount of Rs 33 crore was released by the Centre to the KHADC out of which Rs 28 crore was used for council assets.
“This money belongs to the MDCs which should have been distributed by the KHADC CEM for the developmental projects in different constituencies, instead of allocating the amount for council assets. Even Mawsynram constituency, from which the CEM hails, lacks development in many aspects,” he said.
Sylliang also expressed surprise at the sudden turn of events as the same MDCs from the UDP and the HSPDP, who vented their anger on Syiem over the funds misappropriation, are currently supporting the PDF-led coalition People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA).
