Sympathy For Pakistan Writ large in Assam!

GUWAHATI: After the recent terror attack on a CRPF convoy in Pulwama in Jammu & Kashmir a newer trend of pro-Pakistan facebook posts have come to the fore. What does such a trend reek of?

The section of people resorting to such a practice comprises mostly educated youth. Such a trend, considered as an ominous signal, raises its ugly head at a time when the Islamic community residing in the State has been protesting Pakistan’s design tooth and nail.

The police in the State are alert. They have their focus on two aspects – not to let the trend escalate into a communal flare-up and not to let jehadis use these (misguided) youths. The latter aspect is fraught with the risk of jahadi hideouts springing up in the State.

When contacted, a highly-placed source in the State police force said: “A few youths have been arrested. They’ll be interrogated to know as to why they do like that. They will be set free after a few days. What we’ve to ensure is – not to let jehadis reach these youths and use them as sleeper cells.”

Talking to the media on this issue on Tuesday, State Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said: “We won’t compromise with any such anti-India activity. The government is going to take action against all anti-national elements. We won’t let Assam to be another Kashmir. A fundamentalist organization is seen to be active for safeguarding Rohingiyas in Assam. The government is aware of the demographic changes taking place in the State. If right steps are not taken at the right moment Assam will be a haven of fundamentalists.”

Senior advocate Nekubur Zaman feels that fundamentalists have been working silently in Assam. The youths who post pro-Pakistan texts in the social media might have got their brainwashed by such fundamentalists, or they might be lured with financial gains. He said that some organizations with doubtful motive hold meetings in Guwahati. The police need to keep watch on them, he said.

The crux of the problem lies on social and parental awareness. Parents need to keep watch on what their wards are addicted to, what they keep watching on their mobile handsets. The problem is not confined within the few youths who have uploaded pro-Pakistan posts in the social media. The bigger threat is that these few youths have their sympathizers. The challenge lies in bringing such misguided youths back on track.
