Stone pelting louts

The incident of stone pelting at a bus in which the Australian cricketers were returning to hotel after winning T-20 match against India, on October 10 night, has med and shamed Assam and Assamese people globally. Such an incident is both unfortute and despicable. And it is undoubtedly the handiwork of a few uncouth people.

When the act was not organized, there is nothing much to worry about. The people across the world have come to terms with such kind of acts. However, one should understand the basic thing that this is the result of bad schooling. Good schooling would only produce responsible citizens.

One with quality education always behaves responsibly, whether at home or in public. Well schooled people need not be taught to use dustbins or toilets. The government should therefore invest more in imparting quality education (class I-12) rather than in Swachh Bharat campaign.

Medians and dividers on Guwahati roads

Medians and dividers on most Guwahati roads are either not painted as per standards or continue to exist with almost invisible paint marks. Insufficient night illumition of the roads adds to the problem. There is an urgent need to paint all the medians and dividers on roads in reflective double colours to improve their visibility.

A doyen departs

Few men indeed of our time have done so much to raise and enrich the standard of Assamese jourlism as the ever-busy, active and seasoned jourlist Radhika Mohan Bhagawati, who departed at the age of 84 on the morning of 30th September, 2017- the holy day of Vijaya Dashami. It rests with historians of the future to judge and evaluate what and how much Assamese jourlism owes to Late Radhika Mohan Bhagawati. But at the present moment, it is easier to reflect and cast back on what is lost by us by the ending of so unique a life. May his soul rest in eterl peace.

Ashoke Datta,

Tezpur.
