Takam Mising Porin Kebang (TMPK) to boycott panchayat polls in two wards

TINSUKIA: The Tinsukia district committee of Takam Mising Porin Kebang (TMPK), an apex body of All Mising Students’ Union, unanimously resolved to boycott the ensuing panchayat election in two wards of Dodhia Forest Village in Dibru-Saikhowa National Park in protest against long-standing rehabilitation issue.

In a press meet held at Tinsukia on Thursday, the advisor of TMPK, Minturaj Morang stated that despite assurances by State Forest Minister Pramila Rani Brahma and subsequent official commitment by the PCCF and HoFF in July 2017 that the necessary steps for the rehabilitation of the legal inhabitants would be initiated within eight months, the government did nothing. Incidentally, the two forest villages-Dodhia and Laika fall under Bindhakhata panchayat- home panchayat of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal in Dibrugarh district.

Referring to the resolutions adopted in a public meeting held at Dodhia on November 14, Morang stated that any person found to be casting his vote and violating the decision taken would be boycotted socially and would face public punishment while Mahila Samiti, TMPK and Yuba Sangha would resist in the election process. He also demanded withdrawal of nomination papers by the political candidates on November 19.

In next phase of agitation, TMPK proposes to gherao the residence of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal after swimming across the Brahmaputra, Morang announced.
