Take on us and not civilians: DGP

STAFF CORRESPONDENT

SHILLONG, Jan 9: “Take on us and not victimized the innocent civilians,” stated Meghalaya Director General of Police Rajeev Mehta told The Sentinel over phone even as he termed the GNLA as bunch of vindictive crimils who virtually wanted to make their presence felt at the cost of the lives of innocent people.

“I want to make it clear that the GNLA is a desperate group that cannot take on our force. It has lost the faith of people and it is using the public as scapegoats,” stated Mehta. The militant outfits especially the GNLA is under tremendous pressure to deviate from the path of violence. It is evident from the number of public rallies in the district headquarters.  Mehta said that the GNLA chief Sohan D Shira wants to target civilians who have started to reject the GNLA.

Meanwhile, the Williamgar police have launched massive operation with SWAT and Commando teams against Jimmy and other GNLA rebels. Jimmy is known to be hardcore militant who was involved in the killings of two urmed policemen late last year. He hails from the outskirts of Willimgar, and is known as a close aide of Sohan D Shira.
