Tea Tribe Girl Files Case Against Alleged Rapist

AGARTALA: A tea tribe girl, allegedly a rape victim, has set an example by filing a case in the police station against the alleged rapist when she found that the punishment her community court pronounced was not up to the extent she wanted.

The Champahawar police station under Khowai district registered the case, but yet to arrest the accused.

The incident, according to the complaint, was of November 24 this year during the mid-day when the young girl was going to the house of a relative in the adjoining Manaibari village through the rural path. One Raman Sabar waylaid her and forcibly took her to the nearby jungle and raped her, she alleged.

Setting herself free from the clutch of Raman Sabar she started shouting and that led the local people rush to her rescue. The accused, however, managed to flee the site.

After three days, the leaders of the society met in the house of the victim and after a long deliberation slapped a fine of Rs 40,000 on the accused. They also instructed him to deposit the money by December 27.

However, the girl rejected the verdict and said that such a crime could not be solved in exchange of money. “I want exemplary punishment to the accused,” she said, and filed the case in the police station.
