Shillong, May 6: The All Garo Hills SSA School Teachers’ Association (AGHSSASTA) has condemned the alleged assault of a school headmaster by a police officer in Phulbari, West Garo Hills district.

According to the association one R Shabang sub-inspector of police of Phulbari police station brutally beat up Mominur Raman Modal, Headmaster of Chanupara SSA UP School on April 28. The headmaster had gone to D.LE.Ed class on that particular day and when he was returning from Boldakgre (under Dadenggre Block) to his home Chibinang bazar, he had parked his bike to meet his CRC secretary at Mronggre.

“The sub-inspector without police uniform asked his vehicle’s valid documents and forced to a Rs.2,000 fine for not carrying his valid (bike) documents and later the sub-inspector in  drunken condition asked the name of his father and started beating him brutally and took his bike to the police station,” the AGHSSASTA alleged.

The Headmaster subsequently produced his valid bike documents in police station and got his bike back the next day.

The association’s members met the officer in-charge of the Phulbari police station on May 5, and while quoting the police official said that there was no official order from the M.V Act, or from district transport department to check the documents of vehicles.

“The Headmaster filed an FIR in Phulbari Police station against the illegal act of  the sub-inspector and  the O/C instead of taking action, sent him Tura without transfer order and told public that he is transferred,” the teacher’s association alleged.

“The Sub-inspector without police uniform and in drunken condition had illegally collected money not only from the commercial vehicles but also from the two wheelers,” the AGHSSASTA alleged.

The association stated that it came to know of the allegations after thorough inquiry regarding the matter.
