Teachers ‘unhappy’ with notification to take remedial classes

A CORRESPONDENT

GAURISAGAR, July 3: A notification issued by the Inspector of Schools, Sivasagar division for conducting remedial class for the students of Class VI to Class XII, has evoked sharp reaction from the teachers. Abdul Jelil, Inspector of Schools, Sivasagar Division Circle issued this circular vide memo no.7085-7285 dated June 27, 2018 to the respective heads, principals, headmaster/headmistress of the institutes of both Sivasagar and Charaideo districts to take necessary measures for arrangement of the remedial classes for the greater interest of students. The copy of this notification was also sent to the Director of Secondary Education, Assam and the Deputy Commissioners of Sivasagar and Charaideo districts.

The teachers have reacted strongly as every year from July 1 to July 31, educational institutions remain closed for summer vacation. The All Assam Higher Secondary Teachers and Employees’ Association, Sivasagar District Committee has strongly objected to this notification. In a press release issued by Noren Rajkhowa and Hemant Bhuyan, president and secretary of the committee, it was stated that during summer vacation some students join workshops, summer camps or go on holiday tour. The committee urged the Inspector of Schools, Sivasagar Division Circle, to cancel his notification and not to deprive the teachers of their summer vacation leave.

On the other hand, an emergency meeting of the All Assam Higher Secondary Teachers and Employees’ Association, Sivasagar District Committee was held recently where the members strongly expressed their resentment to continue the remedial classes during summer vacation. The meeting also decided that by no means any member of the association would attend the classes during this period. If any member wishes to attend the classes, the committee would have no objection but he or she would take the classes without signing the attendance register.
