Technical problems loom over Maibela Power Project

JOYSAGAR: Two major hydro-electric turbines of the Maibela (Lakwa) power project of Sivasagar district are not working since the past one week due to major technical problems. The 125-MW Maibela Power Project has been facing technical disorders and hence the power production has decreased since a week. Sources informed that Turbine III and Turbine IV were not working due to which about 50 MW power could not be produced during these days. The Maibela Power Project has to supply power to Gargaon station in Simaluguri and from Gargaon station, the power is supplied to Sivasagar district.

Besides, renovation and fresh installation of many hydropower turbines are underway in the Maibela Project and the Union government has implemented a mega scheme here worth about Rs 250 crore. But as per sources, this scheme needs more than two-and-half years for total completion of work. Hence the present turbines have to take over the load during peak hours and this has led to frequent technical disorders. Due to this sudden breakdown, the power supply in Sivasagar town and in Nazira town has been affected, especially during evening hours.
