Tension in North Tripura District Over Youth’s Death

A Correspondent

Agartala: Damcherra under Panisagar subdivision in North Tripura district remained tense over the recovery of a decomposed body of one Batala Reang (18) from a building in the local market area. The body was recovered a few days ago after some foul smell was coming out of the building. Batala, who was an inmate of a Reang refugee camp, used to stay in this room and worked as a labourer in the market.

Suspecting some foul play behind the death of Batala, some tribal organizations like the Bru Socio-cultural Organization, Association of Young Uchoi, Rupini Social Organization, Mog Social Organisation and Minority Welfare Organization went to the local police station and demanded a probe into the death.

After coming out of the police station, about 150 youths attacked the office building from where the body was recovered and also ransacked some nearby shops. Angered over the sudden incident, the traders of the market also assembled and staged a demonstration.

Receiving the information, additional police forces led by Additional Superintendent of Police Francis Darlong rushed to the area and had a tripartite meeting. The officials assured proper investigation and appealed to all to maintain peace in the area. Additional forces are still in the market but police said there is no reason to be panic.
