The Grand Council of Chiefs of Meghalaya urge for inclusion of Khasi in 8th Schedule

Shillong: The Grand Council of Chiefs of Meghalaya has urged all the 60 MLAs of the State as wella s the Members of Parliament to raise the issue of inclusion of the Khasi language in the Eight Schedule to the Constitution of India.

“The depth, richness and advancement of the language and culture has been ignored by the past and present Government of India till date. We appeal to the 60 MLAs (Khasi, Jaintia and Garo) including the 2 MPs to initiate demonstration before the doorsteps of Parliament to demand rectification of this grave injustice and impartiality done to the Khasi indigenous people,” John F Kharshiing, chairman, the Grand Council of Chiefs of Meghalaya said.

Kharshiing pointed out that there was partiality when the Ministry of Home Affairs, during 2003, to appease and resolve the Bodo agitation introduced the The Constitution (Ninety-second Amendment) Act, 2003, on 18 August 2003, in the Lok Sabha namely the Constitution (One-hundredth Amendment) Bill, 2003 (Bill No. 63 of 2003) which would include the Bodo, Dogri, Maithili and Santhali languages within the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India.

It may be mentioned that the Khasi Author’s Society (KAS) will hold a public procession from Madan Iewrynghep (Fire Brigade Ground) to Malki Ground on September 22 to press for the inclusion of Khasi Language in the Eight Schedule to the Constitution of India.

Meanwhile, the Khasi Student’s Union and the Grand Council of Chiefs of Meghalaya has urged people to converge and express support to the rally organised by the KAS.

Several other organisations have also extended support to the rally.

The ongoing struggle for constitutional recognition of Khasi language in the Eight Scheduled to the Constitution of India since 1979.

There have been several delegation, intellectual articulation and public motivation for the cause of the Khasi language based on the genuine credibility and excellence in literary growth, which is felt deserving for such legitimate demand.
