Third phase of polls in Assam to be held in 9577 polling stations

Guwahati: The third and final phase of Lok Sabha polls in Assam on April 23 will be held in four constituencies- Barpeta, Dhubri, Kokrajhar and Gauhati with 7477062 electors eligible to cast their votes in 9577 polling stations.

For the third phase of polls, a total of 54 nominations were filed for the four Lok Sabha constituencies. As many as 17 candidates have filed their nominations from Gauhati Lok Sabha constituency, while 13 from Barpeta, 9 from Kokrajhar and 15 from Dhubri constituency have filed their nominations for the final phase of polls in Assam.

The candidates in the fray for Gauhati are Junmoni Devi Khound (Independent), Upamanyu Hazarika (Independent), Dr. Faruk Ahmed Bhuyan (Independent), Sadeq Ali (Independent), Rajib Kakati (Hindustan Nirman Dal), Partha Pratim Baruah (Voter's Party International), Ratul Kumar Choudhury (Samajwadi Party), Manoj Sharma (TMC), Bobeeta Sharma (Congress), Queen Oja (BJP), Dr. Avijit Chakraborty (Bharatiya Gana Parishad) and Pankaj Das.

Although there are 17 candidates in fray, the key contenders from Gauhati Lok Sabha constituency are Bobeeta Sarma from Congress and Queen Oja from BJP. Upamanyu Hazarika, Independent candidate will also give a tough competition to both the women candidates.

The total number of electors in the Gauhati constituency are 2178617 out of which 1100746 are males, 1077793 are females and 157 are transgender voters.

In Barpeta, there will be a tough competition between Kumar Deepak Das (AGP), Abdul Khaleque of Congress and Rafiqul Islam of AIUDF. The total number of electors in this constituency eligible to vote are 1676854 out of which 865300 are males and 811538 and 16 are transgender voters.

The key contenders from Kokrajhar Lok Sabha constituency are Sabda Ram Rabha (Congress), Pramila Rani Brahma (Bodoland People's Front), Naba Kumar Sarania (Independent) and Urkhao Gwra Brahma (United People's Party). The total number of voters in the constituency are 1765423 of which the male voters are 900318 and that of female are 865066 and the number of transgender voters are 39.

Moreover, the Dhubri Lok Sabha constituency will have a tough fight between Badruddin Ajmal (AIUDF) and Abu Taher Bepari (Congress) followed by Zabed Islam of AGP. The number of electors eligible to vote in the constituency are 1856168. The number of male voters are 948971 while that of female are 907173 and transgender voters are 24.

For the third phase of polls, the commission has set up 147 all women polling station in the four constituencies- Dhubri- 29, Kokrajhar-11, Barpeta-28 and Gauhati-79.

There are 524 remote polling station for the third phase of polls in Assam. The total number of polling personnel deployed for Phase 3 of elections are 38,308 and 200 Coys of security personnel have also been deployed for phase 3 election.
