Three Asom Gana Parishad Ministers submit resignation before CM Sonowal today

Guwahati: Finally the three Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) cabinet ministers submitted their resignation before the Chief Minister of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal on Wednesday evening.

Asom Gana Parishad president and Agriculture Minister Atul Bora, Assam Water Resources Minister Keshab Mahanta, Assam Food and Civil Supplies Minister Phani Bhushan Choudhury tendered their resignations today.

Speaking before the media, Agriculture Minister of the state, Atul Bora said, "We have already cleared our stand on the matter before the Central Government on various occasions. We also met the Union Home Minister, Rajnath Singh before the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) tabled their final report on January 7 at the Parliament. We knew that the bill will be passed in the Parliament, therefore, we made a last attempt in order to convince the Ministry to scrap the controversial bill. But, it didn't work out. We had left with no option but to resign."

It may be mentioned that the AGP recently walked out of the BJP led alliance in Assam on Monday after the saffron party went ahead with the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 in the Lok Sabha.

The three Ministers, Atul Bora, Keshab Mahanta, Phani Bhushan Choudhury had also thanked the people of Assam for their constant support for the AGP party.
