Three ‘Congress’ Workers Arrested, Cash Seized

NAGAON: A flying squad team and Nagaon town police led by SI Gaurov Mahanta, in a joint drive on Monday night, arrested three suspected ‘Congress’ workers for violating the model code of conduct and also seized around Rs 14.9 lakh from them. They were in a hotel situated at Haiborgaon in Nagaon town.

The cash was kept in some envelopes and it is suspected that the envelopes were supposed to be distributed among voters for favour of Congress candidate Pradyut Bordoloi in the upcoming Lok Sabha election in the district.

According to sources, the district election authority had specific information about the cash and directed the flying squad as well as the police administration to act against the trio. Following the directives of the district election authority, the flying squad and Nagaon town police conducted the search operation and finally got the breakthrough.

The flying squad team and police traced the three persons, who hail from Guwahati and Margherita, to a hotel at Haiborgaon. Police seized the entire cash and also detained them. They have been identified as Jiten Goswami of Fauzdaripatty in Nagaon, Shakil Akhtar of Margherita and Arindam Kakoti of Chandmari Milanpur in Guwahati. They were released on bail on Tuesday morning, said sources.
