Training Meet On Disaster Management Starts In Shillong

SHILLONG: Deputy Commissioner-cum-Chairperson District Disaster Management Authority, East Khasi Hills district, Matsiewdor War Nongbri inaugurated the 3-day training programme on ‘Incident Response System (IRS) for Incident Response Teams (IRTs)’ of Shillong city at the Training Hall, Meghalaya Bharat Scouts and Guides, in Shillong on Monday.

On the occasion, Nongbri also released the Multi Hazard Risk and Vulnerability Assessment (HRVA) report and Risk Atlas of Shillong city prepared by RMSI Pvt Ltd, India.

Theulti- Hazard Risk and Vulnerability Analysis (HRVA) for the municipal area of the city of Shillong has been carried out as part of this on-going USAID-GOI-UNDP Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) programme and is aimed at strengthening the institutional structure to undertake disaster risk reduction activities at various levels, and develop preparedness for recovery.

In her brief address, Nongbri said that the training has been designed to provide management skills to the different stakeholders who are working in disaster management and incident response planning. The training will provide quick and detailed planning on how to respond effectively during disasters, she added.

The three-day training on IRS for the Incident Response Teams (IRTs), namely planning, operation and logistic sections of the seven zones of Shillong city can draw from the HRVA report as the latter identifies the particular risks and vulnerabilities of the different areas of the city. The IRTs designated for each of the seven zones can take into cognizance these particular vulnerabilities and work out specific modalities for quick and effective response for the same based on the Incident Response System.

Rurajit Bordoloi, disaster management expert, will be the resource person for the programme which will be attended by around 340 personnel from the planning, operation and logistic sections of the Incident Response Teams.

The programme was also attended by I Majaw, ADC and CEO, DDMA, East Khasi Hills district, P Lyngba, DDMO, East Khasi Hills district, Maitreyee Mukherjee, City Project Coordinator, UNDP, Shillong among others.
