Training on scientific goat rearing held in Assam Agricultural University, Lakhimpur

LAKHIMPUR: In an unique move, the team Pashu Samriddhi, based at Lakhimpur College of Veterinary Science (LCVS), Assam Agricultural University, Joyhing, North Lakhimpur, organized a two-day long training programme on scientific goat rearing for progressive farmers, entrepreneurs and goat farming aspirants across the State of Assam.

The programme was organized in association with Lakhimpur College of Veterinary Science, AAU, Joyhing, North Lakhimpur to commemorate the golden jubilee celebration year of the Assam Agricultural University at Lakhimpur Veterinary College campus on March 16 and March 17.

Inaugurating the training programme, Dr Uma Ram Tamuli, Associate Dean of LCVS, said, “Animal husbandry has remained an indispensable component of livelihood and socio-economic growth for the people of Assam. The demand for goat meat is ever increasing and there is acute shortage of goat meat which is reflected by the high price for this meat.”

Stating that farmers could earn a handsome profit by value addition of goat meat and milk products, he emphasized that a wide range of entrepreneurial industries could also be developed in this sector of livestock farming. A handbook on ‘Scientific Goat Rearing’ was released on this occasion for the benefit of the farmers.

Dr Pranjal Borah, Assistant Scientist from Burnihat, and Bornali Sarma Baruah, secretary of Krishak Bandhu, addressed the gathering as distinguished guests in the inaugural ceremony. Dr Pranjal Borah was also one of the resource persons in the training programme briefing the prospects of goat farming in India with special reference to the north-eastern States.

Dr A J Nath, the organizing secretary and convenor, on behalf of team Pashu Samriddhi, informed that the team would continue its farmer-friendly efforts to cover all other animal husbandry sectors in different parts of Assam in the near future.

A team of students and faculty members of LCVS has published a bilingual e-magazine titled Pashu Samriddhi since January, 2018. This team has also been engaged in other farmer-friendly and animal welfare activities like conducting vaccination-cum-treatment camp and awareness training camps in different fields of livestock farming.
