GUWAHATI, March 25: The All India Tribal Students’ Association, Assam (AITSAA) has demanded of Prime Minister rendra Modi to ensure a CBI inquiry into the anomalies in the Assam WPT & DC Department that has let the MPs, ministers and MLAs connected to the department mint money.

Talking to newsmen in the city, AITSAA president Byabang Noah Dui, general secretary Baburabha Hakasam and adviser Arindam Prince Panging came down heavily on the Congress and the BJP for, what they said, their dirty politics on the issue of according ST status to the six ethnic groups – Morans, Muttucks, Tea Tribes, Tai Ahoms, Koch-Rajbongshis and Chutias. “The Congress government did politics on the issue for the past 15 years, and now the BJP is following suit by changing its stand on the issue very frequently. Both the Congress and the BJP should make their respective stands on the issue of ST status to the six ethnic tribes clear before the Assembly elections in the State. They need to spell out in no uncertain terms what they exactly want to do on the issue,” the AITSAA leaders said.

The AITSAA leaders further said that there were large-scale corruption in the State WPT & BC Department that let the MPs, ministers and MLAs connected to the department mint money. “MPs, ministers and MLAs connected to the department could amass huge fortunes through the corrupt department. There have been large-scale anomalies in the payment of scholarships that come from the Centre. The payment of scholarships to the students has been totally stopped for the past three years. We want the Prime Minister to ensure the release of scholarships and enhance the amount, besides ensuring a CBI inquiry into the anomalies in the department.”
