MANGALDAI, November 14: Office bearers and members of Kendukalai Xahitya Xamaj, an active branch unit of Axam Xahitya Xabha at Kalaigaon in Udalguri district, at a homage-paying function offered their heartfelt tribute to Ranjit Dey who was one of the pioneers of the Assamese puppet theatre and Samsul Huda, a soft-spoken teacher-cum-poet of Kalaigaon area.

Eminent poet Sanjoy Kumar Tanti and mouzadar of Silpota Mouza, Kamal Prasad Sarma lit two earthen lights to mark the function. Later speaking on the life and works of Ranjit Dey who dedicated his life for promotion of Assamese puppet theatre leaving behind his flourishing business of rice, both the speakers appreciated the spirit of this cultural activist.

The Assamese puppet theatre produced by Ranjit Dey earned popularity in different places of the State, particularly in Upper Assam area. Though in the later part of his life Ranjit Dey upgraded his puppet theatre to ‘Mandakini Theatre’, an Assamese mobile theatre from Kalaigaon, but he failed to achieve the desired success due to fincial crunch.

Former MCLA of BTC-cum-vice-president of Bhergaon District Committee of BPF, Keshab Chandra Deka, jourlist Mukut Raj Sarma and a number of women activists of the locality too took part in the homage-paying function organized at the open ground of the PWD Inspection Bungalow at Kalaigaon.
