Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb tells Director General of Police to prevent post-poll violence

A CORRESPONDENT

AGARTALA: Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb instructed the Director General of Police (DGP) to take appropriate step against persons involved in violent activities irrespective of their political identity.

The Chief Minister’s instruction came amid reports of a series of post-poll violence incidents in different parts of the State. A renowned singer Raja Hassan who was known for his proximity with the CPI(M) and at least 50 others sustained injuries in such violence activities since the declaration of election results.

Most of the injured are supporters of the Congress and the CPI(M). Both the parties alleged that hundreds of houses also were gutted by the ruling party supporters. They also criticized the police of remaining silent. The CPI(M) alleged that many of their senior leaders also were attacked and some miscreants pelted stones at the house of the party’s State secretary Gautam Das.

Pradesh Congress president Pradyot Bikram Kishore Debbarman personally donated a sum of Rs 10 lakh to create a fund to help the Congress workers who fell victim to post-poll violence and lost their property. He also urged all ex-PCC presidents and other leaders to donate generously to the fund.

Apart from attack on Congress and CPI(M) supporters there are many reports of factional clashes between the supporters of BJP and clashes between the supporters of the BJP and its alliance partner — the Indigenous Peoples’ Front of Twipra (IPFT). In the hilly areas of Khowai district, many BJP supporters were attacked by the IPFT.

Dr Ashok Sinha, chief spokesperson of BJP, admitted incidents of post-poll violence but denied the involvement of BJP workers and stated that “resorting to violence is not the party’s policy”. He said some CPI(M) supporters has infiltrated into BJP during last one year and they are creating such nuisances to defame the BJP in the eye of the public.

He added that the party is identifying the people involved in such activities and appropriate action will be taken against them. He denied the allegation about police inaction, and pointed out that the Chief Minister has already instructed the police to act and several persons have been arrested already.
