Tripura Government tightens noose on State-run schools

Agartala, April 22: Education minister Ratan Lal Nath has taken a special initiative to bring all the State-run schools on the grant-in-aid basis under one discipline.

“We’ll hold a meeting with the school authorities shortly,” Nath said.

Sources in the Education department said the aim of the new initiative is to improve the quality of teaching and create an atmosphere conducive for imparting education.

The decision was taken by the minister after the assessment of performance of the State-run schools reflected a dismal picture.

“Barring a few schools, the performances of all the 51 schools which are run on grant-in-aid basis are not at all satisfactory,” an official in the Education department said.

The schools are run by 100 per cent government grant, but the government doesn’t have full control over their management.

Taking advantage of the situation, most of the schools have turned into a centre of political activities over the last 25 years of the Left-front rule.

Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb has said that the political activities in the government offices and schools would not be tolerated.
