AGARTALA, December 9: Polling for 20 municipal bodies including the Agartala Municipal Corporation, 13 Municipal Councils and six gar Panchayats concluded peacefully with more than 85 per cent voters exercising their franchise. Counting of votes will held on December 12.

Though by and large the voting was peaceful, some untoward incidents were reported from different parts of the State. An incident of clash between the supporters of CPI (M) and Congress was reported from Melaghar over alleged booth capture. However, the security forces immediately intervened and brought the situation under control.

The Congress and BJP leaders alleged that in various places CPM workers threatened the opposition and tried to prevent them from going to polling stations. The ruling CPI (M) State secretary Bijon Dhar, however, denied the allegations and said they are trying to make some alibi to justify their impending defeat.

A spokesman of the State Election Commission told reporters that some minor incident were reported and in each case immediate action was taken. He said 85 per cent polling has been reported throughout the state but it may rise further after fil reports arrive. Presence of women voters in large number was a special feature of this election. Few elderly people were also seen going to polling station with the help of others.
