Tripura police stations to have high speed internet

AGARTALA, Dec 14: All the 73 police stations of Tripura will be provided 3G internet connection by March next year. This is part of an elaborate plan drawn by the State government to equip the police with all latest communication facilities to combat any eventuality.

Deepak Gupta, Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court, disposing a public interest litigation in August last had instructed the State government to made adequate arrangement so that the people can file complaints without any difficulty. He also asked the State government to ensure that people can file FIR through internet or SMS. The Chief Justice also instructed the Director General of Police to arrange adequate publicity of the steps taken so the common people can use these facilities.

A home department official said following the High Court orders they have made a detail plan as per which the officer-in-charge of all the police stations will be provided smartphones by the end of December. Subsequently the officer-in-charge of all the police outposts and the supervising officers at the rank of DSP also will be given similar facilities. It will eble people to file FIR through SMS.

The petitioner in the High Court had expressed anguish that despite lots of money being allotted by the centre during last several years for police modernization the communication facilities of the Tripura police has not been improved up to the level of satisfaction.

Nepal Das, IG (operation) told the reporters that the department will bear all the expenses of the mobile phones and internet.
