Tripura Tea Development Corporation to Set Up own Tea Auction Centres

In a move to boost profit from tea auction and avoid being depended on Guwahati and Kolkata auction centers, the Tripura Tea Development Corporation (TTDC) has planned to start their own tea auction centers.

The Northeastern state produces 35 million kilograms of tea annually, most of which is sent to Assam and West Bengal for auction.

The Tripura Tea Development Corporation (TTDC) runs only three out of fifty-eight tea gardens of Tripura at Kamalasagar and Brahmakunda in West Tripura and another at Maachmara in the Northern part of the state.

Individual tea gardens command most of the land under tea cultivation in the state with 42 individually owned tea gardens and 13 are run by co-operative societies. There are nearly 3,000 small tea growers operating in the state.

After processing, around 88 lakh kg made tea is generated annually in several processing plants.

Tea Board of India assistant director (tea development) Diganta Barman said efforts were being made to boost the industry and turn it into a profit-making sector. He said work was being done to choose a logo for their tea.
