Tripura Tribal body wants law to scrap ST Status of Women marrying non-tribals

Agartala: Four months after the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) of Meghalaya passed a bill to scrap the Scheduled Tribe status of tribal ladies who wed non-ST men, Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT) – Tipraha on Monday requested a comparable law to be passed in the winter session of the Assembly. The Tripura Assembly is scheduled from November 29.

In July, the KHADC consistently passed the bill, which likewise said children of Khasi ladies wedding outside their clan would likewise be named 'non-Khasis. Responding to the media, IPFT-Tipraha president Aghore Debbarma said nine requests and four choices were received at a yearly party meeting. "We have reports that there are several occurrences of ancestral young ladies wedding non-tribal men in Tripura. These episodes are happening in expansive numbers at spots like Khowai, where more than 50 per cent ancestral young ladies are wedding non-inborn young men. The indigenous people group are now a minority in Tripura. We need to shield our ethnic personality. A law ought to be passed from Tripura Assembly which will strip such ladies of their ST status," Aghore Debbarma said.

Vice President of the party, Budhu Debbarma asserted that non-tribal young men were getting chances of work permit and employment for their ST spouses. The indigenous party additionally called for prompt usage of National Register of Citizens (NRC) modification in Tripura even as it contradicted the Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016, saying it would imperil ancestral personality in the nation.

IPFT-Tipraha is a group of IPFT, a partner of the BJP government.
