Truckload of illegal IMFL seized at Dillai in East Karbi Anglong District

Bokajan: A loaded truck carrying illegal Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) was seized at Dillai area over National Highway 36 along Assam Nagaland Border in East Karbi Anglong District.

As per reports, at least 1200 cartons carrying illegal Indian made foreign liquor were seized by the police during a patrolling duty from a truck bearing registration number AS 09C 4993.

It has also come to light that the cartons were meant for sale in Arunachal Pradesh. The approximate face value of the seized consignment is said to be over Rs 15 Lakhs.

Police also hints that a possible Inter-state racket is actively involved in smuggling of these liquors and they are tactfully diverting the stocks of Arunachal manufactured liquor into the dry state of Nagaland and Manipur through National Highway 36 in East Karbi Anglong District.

It is to be noted that seizures of illegally transported IMFL in the interstate border areas are made by police and excise sleuths from time to time. However, nothing much has changed over the years and smugglers continue to push illegal liquor into the dry state of Nagaland and Manipur. The excise officials sometimes spring into action if they detected a severe drop in the sale of IMFL in the "Off Shops" bordering Nagaland. Otherwise, their presence is limited to the distillery unit, bottling plant and bonded warehouse in the area.

Earlier, the smugglers used the National Highway 39 route for smuggling liquor into Nagaland. However, after a recent crackdown by various departments along the Numuligarh-Bokajan stretch the smugglers had shifted to NH 36 via Dokmoka in Nagaon district.

It may also be mentioned that acting on a tip-off, excise officials seized at least 510 boxes of liquor, smuggled from Arunachal Pradesh, from a residential complex of New Model Town in Chheharta of Punjab's Amritsar on December 16.

Reportedly, when the owner of the building did not arrive, the excise team, along with police officials, broke open the lock of the house and found two brands – Crazy Romeo and Party Special – from the spot.

It was also reported that the smuggled IMFL liquors were manufactured from Arunachal Pradesh.

The Punjab excise team also suspected that the liquor was supposed to be used during Panchayat Elections in the state.
