Trucks are not permitted to dump excessive loads in Ri Bhoi, Shillong

Shillong: Amidst the conundrum of the coal transporters to Assam, the Deputy Commisioner of Ri Bhoi District Rosette M Kurbah categorically stated that the trucks detected with excess load cannot dump them in any places they find fit.

With coal transportation and mining up in multiple legal tangles, the Ri-Bhoi Deputy Commissioner told the Sentinel, “We have not stopped the transportation of trucks with legal challan carrying coals but stopped them from carrying beyond the listed limit”. The capacity listed is 9 tonnes by any lorry. On being detected for overloading, the transporters download in areas suitable for them, even as she iterated that the site is in Shangbangla

The Deputy Commissioner did not deny this fact even as she said that the strict orders has been given in view of the safety measures that needed to be taken. “From its vulnerability to fire, traffic management to other environmental issues, I will not allow such regular uploading of coal”, she stated .

She conceded that there was haphazard dumping of coal along the highway leading to Guwahati, besides adding that she has written to the government to ensure that such excess coal should be deposited in one depot. As per the Meghalya mining and minerals act, the rules have yet to be put in place, a reason that prompt the deputy commissioner to write to the government to deal on the issue.
