Two held on charges of extortion in Sivasagar

SIVASAGAR, August 31: Two members of an organization, identified as Ranjit Das and Imran Hussain, have been arrested on charges of extortion from a businessman in Betbari area of Sivasagar on Tuesday, police said.

The raid to arrest the duo was conducted by a team of Sivasagar Police led by Additiol Superintendent of Police Debasish Sarma and Sivasagar Sadar PS OC Pradip Kumar Baruah.

Ranjit Das and Imran Hussain were held over a complaint by Tultul Handique, a resident of Betbari Tamuli Bazar Gohain gaon, who has a business of handloom. Tultul had lodged an FIR at Sivasagar Sadar Police Station and submitted a written complaint to ASP Debasish Sarma that he was receiving extortion threat from the duo since last two days.

On the basis of complaints, raids were conducted at various places in Sivasagar and filly they were apprehended from Dolmukh Charialai area of Sivasagar town when trying to extort money from a hotel owner. On being interrogated, they admitted their involvement in extorting money from various businessmen in the recent past, police said.

The arrested members Imran Hussain and Ranjit Das, who called themselves the president and secretary of Asomiya Yuva Mancha, were produced before the court and sent to jail later.

Meanwhile, businessmen of Sivasagar have expressed concern over the rising incidents of extortion in Sivasagar.
