Two journalists awarded

Silchar, May 4: Two Silchar based journalists, Biswajit Roy Barman of Bengali Dainik Jugasankha and Nibedita Choudhury of Dainik Prantojyoti, were awarded Hemendranarayan Roy Smriti Puraskar and Indu Bhushan Dey Smriti Puraskar respectively on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day at Silchar Press Club on Thursday. Biswajit Roy Barman received the award and the honour from the hands of Anwaruddin Barlaskar, former district and sessions judge. Noted journalist, columnist and poet Atin Das handed over the award and the honour to Nibedita Choudhury. Biswajit Roy Barman said that he has been in this profession for the last 20 years. Biswajit was from the first batch of the Department of Mass Communication, Assam University.

Biswajit, a science graduate, joined Dainik Jugasankha in the year 1998 and also had worked in its Guwahati edition for a long time. Nibedita Choudhury was brought into journalism by Ranabir Roy, proprietor, Dainik Sonar Cachar. She writes poems and stories. It is pertinent to mention here that Hemendranarayan Roy was the correspondent of The Statesman from the northeast region. He was a mathematical genius. Indu Bhushan Dey too left an indelible mark on the society. Later, a discussion session was held which was presided over by Mahua Choudhury. Shankar Dey, general secretary of Silchar Press Club delivered the welcome address on the occasion.
