Goalpara, Aug 27: Goalpara Police on Sunday picked up a jeweller and recovered from him stolen orments worth Rs 2 lakh.

The jeweller, Rakesh Karmakar, used to purchase stolen orments from local thieves and recycle them into other orments and sell these at a lesser price.

The police succeeded in bbing two thieves - Shohidul Ali and Khairul Islam - who were involved in a theft at Tilapara area of the town on August 30. Both the accused had entered the house of Dibondhu Das when no one was present, and stole gold orments of around five tolas, and a mobile handset.

Later, Das filed a case at the local police station. Carrying out the investigation of the case No. 310 /17 under Inspector Bhargav Borbora, ASI Jitendra Singha successfully apprehended Shohidul Ali and Khairul Islam and based on information received from them, police apprehended Rakesh Karmakar. Later, all were produced in the court.

The town has seen a rise in petty crimes since the coal handling business in Meghalaya has been banned by the tiol Green Tribul leading to loss of lakhs of jobs in lower Assam districts like Goalpara, Bongaigaon and Dhubri.
