TANGLA: The Indo-Bhutan border villages in Udalguri district fraught with human-animal conflict and bloodshed, continues to witness the brutality of wild jumbos. The wild elephants continue to create terror and trample humans.

A herd of wild jumbos trampled two persons - Nandesar Rabha (50), son of Tipuram Rabha and Lohit Rabha (45), son of Parikhit Rabha at Natun Basti (Nonaipaar) village under Panery Police Station in Udalguri on Sunday night. The herd comprising 5-6 jumbos was creating terror in the village which reportedly falls under encroached area. Some people went to chase the herd away. Both victims were trampled by the elephants while four others managed to escape.

“It is high time the State government should wake up from its deep slumber and adopt long-term strategic solutions that address the underlying causes for the mitigating the menace of man-elephant conflict,” said known wildlife activist of Udalguri, Nabajyoti Baruah. He further said that the forest department should provide alternate forage sources by planting food trees and bamboos over large areas which would go a long way in deterring the elephants from straying into villages in search of food.

“There is a need for a clear policy and strategic planning to resolve human-elephant conflict and elephant conservation issues. In the absence of policy there is an inordinate focus on the symptoms rather than the causes of the problem,” he added.
