Two ULFA (I) rebels arrested by Assam Police

Tamulpur: Tamulpur Police on Saturday arrested two ULFA (I) cadres who had been demanding money from a government employee, Anil Medhi of Tamulpur Development Block under Tamulpur police station in the district of Baksa.

The arrested youths have been identified as Kushal Das (25), son of Ramcharan Das, and Jagat Das (24), son of Jatin Das of village APothalikuchi under Tamulpur police station in the district of Baksa. According to Anil Medhi, on November 4, he received a phone call in his mobile phone from an unknown number and the caller demanded Rs 5 lakh in the name of ULFA (I). The caller also threatened Medhi of dire consequences if he failed to pay the amount.

Medhi approached Inspector Ashim Bora, officer in-charge of Tamulpur Police Station, for help. Bora started investigation with the help of Rajen Boro, in-charge of Gandhibari police outpost, Tamulpur Police tracked the mobile number of the youth which was used for making the extortion call.

On Saturday, officer in-charge of Tamulpur police station, Inspector Ashim Bora and in-charge of Ganfhibari police outpost Rajen Boro launch an operation in village Pothalikuchi and nabbed Kushal Das from his residence. On the basis of the statement of Kushal Das, police nabbed another youth involved in extortion, Jagat Das from Changsari of Kamrup district.

A case has been registered against Kushal and Jagat at Tamulpur police station. Police Inspector Ashim Bora told media persons that police had not ascertained whether the youths were ULFA (I) cadres or not.
